Liver Love: Simple Ways to Support Your Liver This Spring

As we move towards spring, nature is waking up—buds are appearing, new shoots are pushing through the earth, and the energy around us is rising.

In Chinese Medicine, spring is associated with the Wood element and the Liver, which share this same upward, expansive movement. Like bamboo swaying gracefully in the wind, our energy also wants to move freely and smoothly. If the Liver becomes stagnant, we can feel stuck—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of qi and blood throughout the body. It plays a crucial role in menstrual health, emotional balance, the flexibility of our muscles and tendons, as well as the health of our nails and eyes. Any problems with vision (both literally and metaphorically) have their roots in our Liver energy.

When the Liver is in good health, we feel clear-headed and able to move forward in life with ease. When it is sluggish or stagnant, we may experience tension, frustration, and various physical symptoms.

 Signs Your Liver Needs Support

If your Liver energy isn’t flowing well, you might notice:

  • Headaches or migraines (especially in the temples or behind the eyes)

  • Painful or irregular periods

  • Tight neck and shoulders

  • Dry, red eyes or floaters in your vision

  • Tendonitis or muscle stiffness

  • Waking frequently between 1 am and 3 am

  • Brittle or ridged nails

  • Irritability, frustration, or anger

  • Feeling impatient or rushed

  • Being overly self-critical

  • Craving alcohol

  • Struggling to see a clear path forward in life

How to Support Your Liver This Spring

The good news is that the Liver responds well to small, daily changes. Here are some simple ways to keep your Liver energy moving:

 1. Move Your Body
Physical activity helps the Liver move blood and qi, keeping everything flowing smoothly. Gentle movement like yoga, walking, and stretching can be as beneficial as more vigorous exercises like running or strength training.

 2. Eat Liver-Loving Foods
Fresh, green foods nourish the Liver. Try incorporating:

  • Leafy greens (kale, spinach, dandelion)

  • Beetroot and carrots

  • Citrus fruits (lemon, lime, grapefruit)

  • Garlic, turmeric, and ginger

3. Start Your Day with a Liver Detox Juice
Warm lemon water in the morning is a simple yet powerful way to support the Liver. You can also try a detox juice with celery, parsley, ginger, and lemon—just make sure it’s room temperature, not cold, to look after your digestive fire and Spleen.

 4. Dry Brush Before Your Shower
Using a dry brush before you shower stimulates circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and helps the Liver detoxify more efficiently.

 5. Book A Seasonal Acupuncture Treatment
This is a perfect time to visit a local acupuncturist who can support all these different aspects of your Liver function. If you suffer from hay fever, getting treatment now can be especially beneficial (please make sure they are registered with the British Acupuncture Council).

The Liver has a deep connection to our emotions and vision for the future. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about the emotional and spiritual aspects of the Liver, but for now, I’ll leave you with the wonderful Rikka and some very simple qigong moves for the Liver meridian.

Wishing you smooth energy and a sense of flow as we move into this new season!
