A love letter to your Kidneys

As I sit to write this, my very first newsletter, the sun is shining, and the first snowdrops and primroses are appearing in my garden - a joyful reminder that spring is on its way.

However, we’re still in the depths of winter, and Chinese Medicine teaches us the importance of living in harmony with the seasons.

 Each major organ system is linked to a season, and winter is associated with the Water element, within which are the Kidney and Bladder organs. 

 The Water element embodies the depth and stillness of the ocean - an in-between space, resting between the decay of autumn (the Metal element) and the renewal of spring (the Wood element).

 The Kidneys teach us to lean back and trust rather than force things when the energy isn’t there - to get comfortable in the quiet, waiting and listening until the impulse to act naturally arises. Not easy!

 This week, I want to share a few simple ways to support your kidneys physically. Next time, we’ll explore the emotional and spiritual aspects.

 Ways to Nourish Your Kidneys:

  • Rest and Slow Down – Prioritise sleep and allow moments of stillness in your day. Sit with a cup of tea and savour each sip. Resist the urge to check your phone while waiting in a queue - instead feel your feet on the ground and tune into your breath.

  • Spend Time by Water – Sitting by a river or the sea (or any body of water) can be deeply restorative for the kidneys.

  • Eat Warming Foods – Root vegetables, nuts (especially walnuts and chestnuts), kidney-shaped beans, and mildly salty foods like seaweed and miso all nourish Kidney energy.

  • Keep Warm – Especially your lower back and avoid sitting or standing on cold stone floors for long periods.

She has studied and taught Qi Gong for many years, and here she shares simple exercises to support the Kidney and Bladder. Just a few minutes a day can make a huge difference.
